

Though she was the first queen of Ravan, the Lankan king, her marriage with Ravan was not an easy one. They adopted her as their daughter and she was renamed as Mandodari. Mayasur and Hema, who are performing penance nearby, responded to her call. After twelve years Madhura became a beautiful maiden again but as she had to live in the well she cried out loudly from the well to get help. Observing her plight Shiv compensated the curse that one day she would become a beautiful woman and be married to a great and valiant man. Being agitated she cursed Madhura and sent her to live in a well as a frog for twelve years.

Returning home Parvati found traces of ashes from Shiv’s body on Madhura’s breasts. At that time Parvati, wife of Shiv, was away from home and in this opportunity Madhura had an illicit coitus with Lord Shiv. She was the daughter of Mayasur, King of the Asurs (demons) and Hema, an apsara (celestial nymph Legend says that once an apsara named Madhura arrived at Mount Kailash, the abode of Shiv, to pay her respect to Lord Shiv. Among a few female characters in Ramayan, an Indian epic, Mandodari, first queen of lnakan king Ravan, is a very important character next to Sita, the heroine.
